The "Steps" Model

"Steps" Leadership Process


Putting the PLG Leadership Model to work requires a carefully-studied process. Thus, I introduce the “Steps” model. It includes three steps that a great leader must take in his journey:

  1. Step in to inspire, teach and train
  2. Step back to permit, coach, and evaluate and;
  3. Step up to mentor, explore, grow.

These steps are founded on trust, collaboration, and humanity.

Step In


Inspire, educate, and train

The first step in the Steps Model is stepping in. Here, the leader must start by inspiring his people. Inspiration can drive people to buy into your leadership. Next, the leader must educate his people. By giving information to your people, they trust and respect you in return. You're able to establish credibility because they know what you're doing. Then, the leader equips his people by giving them the training they need to execute their tasks.

Inspiring and educating is where the leader gives motivation. Then, as he teaches and equips, the leader transfers a set of skills to the people. In between equipping and inspiring, he outlines the knowledge that his people can use.

Step Back


Permit, mentor, and evaluate

The second step in the Steps Model is stepping back. Here, the leader permits his people to do exactly what you've taught them, then mentor, and evaluate.

In the process, these things happen: empowerment, adjustments, and realizations. The values required are acceptance, agility, and attentiveness.

Step Up


Explore, strategize, and innovate

The third step in the Steps Model is stepping up. Here, the the confident leader now explores new opportunities for his people. He draws strategies to succeed in the venture, and introduce innovation in the process.

Also involved in the process are testing, change, and discovery. As the values required to do this are patience, courage, and openness.
