How leaders get their people's attention

Leading and managing in the Philippines

We must clearly realize that doing more all the time and at the same time doesn’t necessarily translate to productivity. If it does, just for how long?

Leadership Speaker Philippines Competition

We now live in what I call the “Attention Community,” when attention has become one rare commodity we all fight to get as leaders. Because of the free flow of information and continuous innovation and technological advances, we, along with our people, are easily distracted to always attempt to perform par excellence. We must clearly realize that doing more all the time and at the same time doesn’t necessarily translate to productivity. If it does, just for how long?

It’s a mistake to make this the norm for survival. And from my point of view, doing more simultaneously isn’t reliance. It’s compliance. And you don’t want people to comply with your leadership. You want them to rely on it.

Our tendency is at an all-time high to do more based on what our leaders ask us to do at a given time if at all we’re given a task to do. The 8:00-5:00 or 9:00-6:00 job is no more. As leaders, we can make the terrible mistake of pushing our people to work round-the-clock. We get into the habit of texting them at midnight. We send them an e-mail at 3:00 A.M.

We expect our people to fear to lose their jobs if they are unable to respond to us at any time of the day. And yet we expect them to produce optimum results all the time as if they are machines. We all see technology as a tool for better leadership and productivity, but this may not always be the case.

That's it for today. Get back to work and make it worth your time and energy.

About this article

Stepback Leadership Book Summary

This book paints an inspiring picture on how the so-called barbaric, naive, and uneducated ancient Filipino society has constructed and maintained a millennia-old magnificent edifice of elaborate beauty, which on the contrary speaks volumes of our great identity, unique leadership philosophy, and sustainable management ingenuity.

Culture transformation isn't an overnight magic

But when we look at our challenges as cultural, then we are in a better position to address the culture instead of the situation. Thus, most organizational problems are not situation in real nature. It's cultural.

The role of culture in leadership

Our indigenous people know who they are, where they stand, and what they represent (modern-day branding). They have identified, clarified, and solidified their culture so strong not even time was able to put them away.

The leadership ingenuity of the Filipinos

My argument is simple: It must have been impossible to build such an engineering marvel without any leadership philosophy and management system—an outright dismissal of the notion that "our ancestors were naive, barbaric, and uneducated."

How leaders get their people's attention

We must clearly realize that doing more all the time and at the same time doesn’t necessarily translate to productivity. If it does, just for how long?

Leadership and mutual respect

Mutual respect makes a lasting leadership. When people say it's lonely at the top, it only happens when you're alone at the top. Why not bring as many people as you can so you can all enjoy being on top?

Trust as a leadership strategy

A stepback leader knows that trust is the beginning of possibility. He, or she, knows that nothing great can ever be achieved without trust.

Leadership Development Syllabus

Leadership Speech for Motorcentral

"In leadership, there's a difference between leading and being followed. If you're leading, it means people rely on you. If you're simply being followed, it means they only comply with you."

The Truth About Leading in the Philippines

Chances are, our type of leadership today creates a culture of self-centeredness, individualism, doubt, and competition—a perfect recipe for an inevitable disaster where everyone becomes a casualty.

Confused leadership identity

Two tales of Filipino leadership happens at the same time. One, a display of Filipino ingenuity in Mercedez-Benz.

Subtle takeover of leadership

Stepback Leadership is a practice of putting the people at the center of leadership.

Nobody wins in competition

The front liner will never stop defending his place against the up-and-coming who will never stop wanting to take his place.

The Philippines is home to natural beauty. And we need not change that. We are naturally beautiful inside and out. Yet, we often feel lacking. Thus, ungrateful. We feel we're not enough. Then, we find ourselves wanting for more.
